Current situation[]
Although music can exist both abstractly in the thinking of a composer or performer and concretely as a recording on a sound carrier or score, the development of music as a social phenomenon takes place primarily in the context of a live performance as a result of the joint effort of the participants in the act of creating music. The word "concert" could be used as a common denominator for the situation of live performance of music.
A concert is a collective endeavor consisting of various musical and non-musical activities. In order for these activities to take place, the participants must reach an agreement on how to coordinate related tasks. At the most basic level, concertgoers coordinate their expectations and obligations with the musician's artistic efforts (for example, when a street musician performs for bystanders). At a more complex level of specialization, for example, composers, singers, instrumentalists, conductors, orchestra directors and management teams, music publishers, sheet music writers, concert organizers, music critics, and audiences have to coordinate interdependent activities through sequentially related and often overlapping processes (Gilmore 1987: 209-210).
Traditionally, in European music life, the organization of a concert takes place institutionally, starting from the willingness and resources of the owner of the concert venue (for example, the state, local government, private company or individual) to hire a concert venue operator (concert organizer), who in turn hires the performers at the concert. Institutional concert management works well for large paid music groups, such as opera houses, symphony orchestras, or large choirs, which regularly perform standard repertoire with a relatively similar performance lineup.
Institutional concert organization is contrasted with creator-centered concert organization, whose initial impulse and concept comes from a living composer or performer. The core of the creative person-centered concert organization is a music project, which is realized as concerts and/or recordings. The music project is managed by a producer whose task is to find resources for the realization of the music project and to negotiate with the operators of the concert venues to organize the concerts. The creative person-centered concert organization enables the realization of qualitatively new musical ideas, favors non-standard performance ensembles and stimulates cooperation of different creative fields in a new way.
European Network of Music Projects focuses on supporting creative-oriented concert organization and helps to bring new audiences to endangered music genres (for example, contemporary classical music).
