Programme note
This works title is borrowed from a landmark in my native Gwent (South Wales) near the village where my father was born. The Revenge Stone marks the site where Welsh locals struck back at the Norman lord who was oppressing them. In my piece, which unfolds as a single slow movement, this is reflected through instrumental power struggles and through the way that one instruments dominate one another in turn. The piece was commissioned by Nia Harries who gave the first performance (with Iwan Llewelyn Jones) in the Music for Wexford concert series, Ireland in 2007.

Edvard Grieg composed the Cello Sonata in A minor, Op. 36, his largest chamber work, in 1883 marking a return to composition following a period when the composer had been pre-occupied with his conducting duties at the Bergen Symphony Orchestra as well as illness. Grieg dedicated the piece to his brother, John, a keen amateur cellist. Ludwig Grützmacher premièred the work with Grieg at the piano on the 22 of October 1883 in Dresden
